Sacred Heart
by Rev. Peter J. Arnoudt, SJ
Recommended to us as even better than The Imitation of Christ. Jesus speaks to the reader - through the author, of course - in short, easy-to-understand chapters that are filled with wisdom. Thereafter the soul speaks to Jesus.
This book thoughtfully covers every way in which we can perfect ourselves through devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Not only that, but it warns us against every pitfall we face in the daunting task of attaining holiness. It includes important chapters on:
- The dissatisfaction worldly goods provide
- Salvation and the Sacred Heart
- Perfection and imitation of the Sacred Heart
- Cleansing of mortal and venial sins
- Sanctifying grace
- Jesus’s life and the Sacred Heart
- Jesus’s suffering and the Sacred Heart
- Unity with the Sacred Heart

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque is one of the most extraordinary visionaries in the history of the Church. As the apostle of devotion to the Sacred Heart, her visions not only have full validation as authentic in virtue of their papal approval and her canonization, but have also experienced universal adoption in the Church with the promulgation of the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and widespread promotion of the First Fridays devotional practice, as well as the Thursday night Holy Hour. Her fascinating life is detailed in these pages, written by her own hand—a rare gift to the Church indeed.
Devout from youth, St. Margaret Mary vowed at a young age to become a nun, but she delayed until she was 24 and could no longer withhold herself from Christ. She suffered much in her life, but she was gifted with visions of Our Lord, visions which became the basis of her promotion of the Sacred Heart devotion. In addition to the harsh (and at times seemingly excessive) penances she placed on herself, she received opprobrium from her sisters, who doubted the authenticity of her visions and mission, and much opposition from others in the Church, too. Through it all, her mission from the Lord's Sacred Heart triumphed, and she became the ultimate advocate of the furnace of Divine Charity beating for souls in Our Lord's breast.
For anyone who wishes to know more about the Sacred Heart of Jesus and how to adore It, The Autobiography of Saint Margaret Mary—the source—is one of the best ways.

Booklet, size 7" x 4.25", 98 pages
by Abbé Berlioux
After the devotions of May to His Blessed Mother Mary, we turn now to June, the month of His love. To increase our fervor, The Month of the Sacred Heart, by the Abbé Berlioux, contains a valuable trove of practices and sentiments toward sanctifying the month of June. Excellent as a daily reader for the month, but also very useful for the monthly First Friday devotions and home enthronement preparations and ceremonies, as well as matrimonial devotions, anniversaries and vow renewals.
Each chapter contains the whole day’s reading, prayer, and a fitting example for the reading, usually taken from the author’s personal knowledge or some other historical example. Much of the life of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque is included, as well as incredible inspiration and pearls of hope from the tumultuous nineteenth century – a century that echoes our own in social and spiritual unrest. This is what gives the book a unique atmosphere, and timeless appropriateness. As each of the thirty days of June progress, the subjects cover every possible facet of the Sacred Heart devotion, solidifying for the devotee a rich theological truth and piety.
The subjects range from the origins of the devotion and life of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the incredible promises of the Sacred Heart devotion, the material and spiritual objects of the devotion, a description of, and ways to devote oneself to each symbol within the Image itself, the various desires of our Lord’s Heart, the terrible “thorns”, or sorrows, with which His people wound His Heart, the means of honoring His Heart, beautiful ways to execute the practice of this devotion in our everyday lives, the hearts of the Holy Family, and more. The readings are short and easy for modern man to complete for a morning meditation, between the labors of a busy life, and for raising to a higher level one’s entire being to live each moment in honor of His Divine Heart. Let us make impossible the words of St. Francis of Assisi that, “Love is not loved”.
The examples after each reading reflect upon each truth taught each day. Many of the stories are literally of conversions and miraculous events occurring due to a petition to the Sacred Heart, and others are simply inspiring about individuals who lived deeply devoted lives, consecrated to the Heart of Jesus. Truly, those who persevere through this devotion will save their own souls, the souls around them, and deliver many souls from the fires and pains of Purgatory.
The prayers that follow each daily reading are written specifically to inspire a greater love in relation to the subject treated for that day, perfectly-matched to the theme of the reading.
The Month of the Sacred Heartwas first published in the French language in Grenoble. The book was soon after translated for the English-speaking world and published in 1885. The Abbé Berlioux was a priest of the diocese of Grenoble and was the Curé, or parish priest, of the church of St. Bruno. In his works he often uses a literary charm of addressing the reader personally. In this work, he calls out to the reader, addressing him by the name, “Christian”, or “Christian”, in nearly each day’s reading as he gets to the point of what the individual could do to utilize and live a Christian life based on a greater devotion to the Sacred Heart, increasing the seriousness of the tone as well as gripping the attention of the reader with it.
Read The Month of the Sacred Heart to increase in the soul the love of Christ’s love! The devotion taught in its pages will take the reader by the hand and lead him to live more fully the life of a brother of Christ. In its pages you will find:
- An organized 30 days of Sacred Heart devotions for the complete month of June
- Daily spiritual reading on the various facets of the devotion to Jesus’ Heart
- A detailed study of the Image of the Sacred Heart and ways to personally apply the message
- Daily prayers to the Sacred Heart
- Daily examples of true-life stories that draw out the truths within each day’s reading.
- A collection of devotions and prayers, including a special means of attending Mass through the Sacred Heart of Jesus

How to Practice the Sacred Heart Devotion
by Fr. John Croiset, S.J.
After her death, Fr. John Croiset, S.J., one of Margaret Mary's confessors and directors, compiled in 1691 the revelations and prayers she had had relevant to the devotion to the Sacred Heart. Unfortunately, Fr. Croiset had made some procedural errors in the eyes of the Church, and so his book was forbidden and forgotten for about two hundred years. However, it was discovered again and saw new life.
For anyone who wishes to know more about the Sacred Heart of Jesus and how to adore It, Devotion to the Sacred Heart is the original guide to one of the tenderest and most exceedingly precious devotions in the Church's arsenal. All treasures of graces, truth, beauty, goodness, joy, and love are contained in the Lord's Heart. May we approach It with the zeal and humility of St. Margaret Mary and Fr. Croiset to serve Our Lord most intimately.

The Way of Divine Love
by Sister Josefa Menendez
Sister Josefa Menéndez was born into a devoutly Catholic family in Madrid, Spain on February 4, 1890. Endowed with an aptitude for prayer and drawn to the religious life from childhood, she first had to support her povertystricken family as a dressmaker. In spite of many hardships her desire to completely offer herself to God never wavered. She left Spain in 1920 to enter a French monastery of the Society of the Sacred Heart, where she became a Coadjutrix Sister. In the convent she received numerous private revelations that gave her a distinguished place among visionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She died a holy death on December 29, 1923.
The Way of Divine Love is the definitive record of Sister Menéndez’s life and the heavenly messages that she received. It is one of the most complete chronicles of an individual’s extraordinary mystical experiences in the history of the Church. Despite many trials in her daily life, she recorded everything that she received from heaven as faithfully as possible, including her incredibly detailed visions of the Passion of Christ.
Everything in Josefa’s life is grace giving and profoundly moving. Her writings and her life confirm each other, as evidence that all that took place in her was divine in origin. Even the most extraordinary happenings have an aim and significance. There are no unessential details, no record of revelations that do not bring out in clearer light and force some dogmatic truth, giving us deeper insight into the Heart of Our Lord, His love, the value of souls, the happiness of heaven, the irreparable loss of the damned.

Containing a Message from Our Divine Lord for the Clergy of the World

This book will surprise readers with its profundity and many spiritual revelations.
Mother Louise Margaret Claret de la Touche lived from 1868-1915. She entered the Visitation convent in 1890 at Romans, France and is the artist of the "Picture of Jesus Merciful" painting, which she transcribed after an interior vision. She wrote her Autobiography from 1904-1905 as ordered by Father Alfred Charrier, her spiritual director. She was named superior of her convent two years later and retained the position until 1913. Mother Louise Claret is the author of The Little Book of the Work of Infinite Love, The Love and Service of God, The Book of Infinite Love, and The Sacred Heart and the Priesthood. "My priest is My other self; I love him, but he must be holy."
Mother Louise Margaret Claret de la Touche (1868–1915), a Visitation sister, was commissioned first by Our Lord, then by her religious superiors to write The Sacred Heart and the Priesthood based on her lifetime of conversations with the Divine Master. Its purpose is to strengthen the souls of priests in the love of their sublime vocation, to unite them more than ever to Jesus Christ, the eternal Priest, and to give the faithful a greater confidence in and more religious and filial respect for the orders of the sacred hierarchy. (p. xxxii)
The Holy See has declared Mother Louise Margaret's writings to be in conformity with the teachings of the Church and has sanctioned the organization of priests she had drawn up under the name of the Priests' Universal Union of the Friends of the Sacred Heart. A gift for seminarians, priests, and anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of this vocation, The Sacred Heart and the Priesthood is a profound exploration of Holy Orders made between a mystic of the Church and Our Lord Himself. A Collection of Letters, Maxims, and Practices of the Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque.
Edited by Eleanor C. Donnelly.
In linking together this chain of antique pearls drawn by sainted fingers from the casket of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it would seem to us that the chaplet were incomplete without some special mention of that pearl of great price, that blessed Margarita, for whose purchase the heavenly Merchant gave all that He had, to the end that He might possess it entirely and forever.
In the letters of a saint, in the written conceptions of a heart closely united to God, and weighing every Word in the balance of truth and purity of intention, we have assuredly the mirror of a just soul reflecting in its shining beauty the unbroken image and likeness of its Creator.
Moved by these considerations, and opining that the Infinite Wisdom, which never acts without a purpose, must have had some special design in inspiring and preserving the letters of the Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque, the Compiler of this little work has seen fit to collect the principal part of those holy epistles within its pages, and to add thereto the maxims and practices of their saintly writer. May the perusal of her fervent words, may the imitation of her zealous practices inflame the heart of the reader with the same fire of divine love that glowed in the breast of the Blessed Margaret, and won for her from our divine Lord Himself the title of the beloved disciple of His Sacred Heart!

by Rev. P. Huguet, Marist,
translated by a Sister of Mercy.
Pious souls, deeply afflicted by the outrages that the Sacred Heart of Jesus receives from careless and impious Christians, consecrate to It, in the spirit of reparation, the first Friday of each month. Is it possible, O faithful souls who read these touching words proceeding from the Heart of your loving Saviour, that you can remain insensible to the invitation that He extends to you to repair the outrages heaped upon His love ? Will you have less zeal for Jesus Christ than for an earthly friend or for a loving father—you who can not bear to see a loved one suffer the least ill-treatment without expressing your grief and endeavoring to console him by your affectionate tenderness?

Saint Claude de la Columbiere, Saint Margaret Mary Aloocoque, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus
by Margaret Yeo
“My pure love unites forever these three hearts.”
These were the words spoken to St. Margaret-Mary on Friday, June 21, 1675 by Our Lord as she received Holy Communion from the hands of St. Claude de la Colombière, just after they had knelt together before the Blessed Sacrament and dedicated themselves to serve the Sacred Heart.
This was not the first time, nor the last, that Our Lord had spoken to her. Indeed, most of her life was lived in constant and intimate communion with the Sacred Heart of her spouse. The first time she laid eyes upon St. Claude Our Lord told her, “This is he whom I have sent you. He is My faithful servant and perfect friend.”
This book, unlike others about St. Margaret-Mary or the revelations of the Sacred Heart, contains the full story of St. Claude’s life and the role that he played in hers and in the task of “making known” the Sacred Heart and the promises made to those who live and promote that devotion. On May 31, 1992, Claude de la Colombière was canonized. His feast day is Feb 15.

It was the privilege of St. Gertrude to rest on the breast of Jesus, but it was the mission of St. Margaret Mary to give the devotion of the Sacred Heart to the world. It was to her that Christ confided twelve promises in behalf of those who would honor and love His Sacred Heart.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart is a powerful little booklet filled with many of the treasures to be found in the veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Besides containing an explanation of the symbolism found within the Image of the Sacred Heart, it also includes explanations of the 9 First Fridays devotion, known as the Great Promise, and the miraculous cure of St. Gemma Galgani, as well as many profound exhortations to offer reparation to the Sacred Heart.
Our Lord instituted this authoritative and moving devotion Himself, saying, "I set neither limit nor measure to My gifts of grace for those who seek them in My heart."
In our age of religious indifference, when fervor and charity have grown cold, Jesus exhibits to the world His Sacred Heart as the symbol of God's infinite love showing His Divine Heart as a furnace whose burning rays of love are able to reanimate faith and rekindle love in hearts grown cold and ungrateful.

by Brother Ernest, C.S.C
This is the story of a girl who even in her youth loved to talk to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Our Lord appeared to Margaret Mary with His Heart pierced and bleeding, encircled with a crown of thorns telling her, "Behold this Heart which so loved men." He told her that wherever His Heart would be exposed and honored, He would lavish graces and blessings. Special graces are given to all who communicate on the first Friday of nine consecutive months. To anyone who promotes this devotion He said their names would be written in His Heart, never to be blotted out.

Sacred Heart Book
by Fr Francis Xavier Lasance
We purpose, by means of this book, to inculcate the proper spirit of the devotion to the Sacred Heart, to assist souls in cultivating the interior life in the midst of the distracting pursuits of the world, and to foster a fervent yet reasonable devotion - a love that is both affective and effective - not a mere sentimentality, but a robust and practical piety.
It is this that lives become self-forgetting, devoted, according to the Heart of Jesus, and, through, union with Him, are hidden in God.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus
by St John Eudes
Saint John Eudes was born at Ri, a country parish near Caen, Normandy, in 1601. Endowed with extraordinary talents and filled with burning zeal for the salvation of souls, he devoted 50 years of life, until his death in 1680, to the preaching of missions and to the organization of ecclesiastical seminaries. He founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, generally known as the Eudist Fathers, for missionary and seminary work; the Order of Our Lady of Charity with its two observances of the Refuge and of the Good Shepherd; the Society of the Most Admirable Heart for lay persons aspiring to perfection in the world; and lastly, Confraternities of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary for the propagation among the faithful of the devotion, of which he was the first apostle. He wrote the first Mass and Office for the special feast in honor of the Sacred Heart and of the Holy Heart of Mary, which he established thirty years before the revelations of the Sacred Heart to Saint Margaret Mary.
For those who relish a rich interior life, Loreto Publications is delighted to provide you with the seraphic insights of Saint John Eudes, one of the greatest spiritual writers of all time. Known as the apostle of devotion to the Sacred and Admirable Hearts of Jesus and Mary, John Eudes is very much needed in this apathetic age. An atrophic, and chilling frigidity of soul seems to be threatening the very lifeblood of Catholic altruism. Although the sacramental lifeblood of grace, with all of its divine efficacy, is inexhaustible in its source, even still, the maternal hands of the Lord s holy mother, who longs to dispense the higher gifts of God with such largesse, can be tied on account of our lukewarmness.
Behold this Heart which has loved man so much, Jesus said to Saint Margaret Mary as He unveiled that pulsing reality to her enraptured eye. This is the Heart of Our Savior that was pierced by a lance. This is the Heart Saint John Eudes presents to us in the unforgettable exposé.
Like Saint John the Apostle, Father Eudes had the privilege of what could be nothing less than direct intimate access to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. One can only conclude after reading this book that here was a man driven by the Holy Spirit to cast fire upon the earth with the pen of a scrivener lost in divine abandon. God is wonderful in His saints, and with holy gusto Loreto seconds the accolade given to Saint John Eudes by a grateful generation: the wonder of his age.
