Rose Hu was born on May 4, 1933, in Shanghai, the eighth of nine children. She converted to Catholicism and was baptized on April 17, 1949 just six months prior to China officially becoming Communist. Following her arrest in 1951, Rose spent the next 26 years in Chinese concentration camps under Mao Tse-Tung.
