San Damiano 17.75" Wall Cross
$211.00
Joseph Studio
Resin/Stone Mix
This truly meaningful and unique crucifix is a reproduction of cross at which St. Francis prayed. Three-dimensional rendition of the San Damiano crucifix is made of resin and measures 17 3/4"H x 13 1/4"W x 1 1/2"W.
The original cross, fashioned about 1100 A.D., hangs in Santa Chiara Church in Assisi. When in 1257, the Poor Clares moved to Santa Chiara, they took the San Damiano Cross with them and still guard it with great solicitude. The crucifix now hanging over the altar of the ancient church of San Damiano is a copy.
All Franciscans cherish this cross as the symbol of their mission from God to commit our lives and resources to renew and rebuild the Church in the power of God. Today the original cross hangs in Santa Chiarra (St.Clare) Church in Assisi. It was while praying before this cross that Our Lord gave St. Francis of Assisi the commission to go and rebuild the Church! We celebrate St. Francis' feast day on October 4th.
