A recent perusal of a modern set of encyclopedias revealed a mere three-line entry for Roland, whose story formed the basis for one of the first great epics of medieval France, the Chanson de Roland. So much of western culture was born from this legend, and yet most young people today have never even heard of him.
Books like Page, Esquire and Knight are the perfect antidote to this lack. An anthology of tales condensed from such classics as Malory's Morte d'Arthur, the Arthurian poems of Tennyson, and the original Chanson de Roland, it gives young people a solid introduction to these giants of literature which is sure to inspire a lasting interest. Included are tales of King Arthur's knights, the battles of Charlemagne, Godfrey de Bouillon and The Crusades, St. George and the Dragon, and Pierre Terrail LeVieux, the famed Chevalier du Bayard. Engagingly written and enhanced by vivid illustrations, Page, Esquire and Knight is sure to be attractive to both boys and girls, young and old.

This is perhaps the most beautiful book we have come across in a long time, and it was a labour of love to reprint it for you. Each lavishly illustrated page is mesmerizing in its detail but even more so for its love of the beauty of our Faith. Printed in a deep, rich brown ink on cream paper, with a cloth hardcover and dimensional gold embossing, this is a book that will make you feel proud to be Catholic. Makes a perfect gift--even for those who already know their alphabet quite well.

by Gelett Burgess
Experience for yourself the treasure that inspired generations of children's authors, including the young Dr. Seuss. Gelett Burgess first published Goops and How to be Them in 1900, using reverse psychology to poke fun at childrens' poor manners, and giving life to a set of characters he would continue to develop over several decades, through numerous books and even a comic strip.
This collection contains the two most popular of these: the original Goops and How to be Them and its sequel, More Goops and How Not to be Them. We've even included an excerpt from The Burgess Nonsense Book that showcases an entire Alphabet of Famous Goops!

When a poor devout widow begs for a scrap of bread from a rich faithless baker, she promises to participate in the king’s wedding mass as payment for the baker’s generosity. The baker writes “One Mass” on a scrap of paper and places it on his scale to determine how much bread it is worth. To his and the entire town’s surprise, nothing in the shop, not even the gigantic wedding cakes made for the king, outweighs the simple piece of paper representing the true worth of a Mass.
Luminous old-world watercolor paintings grace the interior of the book and gold foil artwork lends an air of solemnity and sacred beauty to the story. This has been a best-selling children's book since it was first published.

If you want to be strong and of good courage, be sure that you care less about death than about shame.
-Geoffroi de Charny
Battles - Honour - Miracles!
This book is filled with amazing stories of little-known Catholic heroes presenting spectacles of bravery and valour never exceeded in all the annals of history. Demonstrating his gallantry through daring feats of arms, the knight's faith, coupled with his marvellous courage, made him nearly invincible on the field of battle. Built around a stirring chronicle of the Knights of St. John, these inspiring accounts bring to life Catholic heroes who fought with courage, chivalry, and an unwavering trust in God to protect their neighbour, their country, and their Faith.
"You must in no way indulge in too great fondness for pampering your body, for love of that is the worst kind of love there is. But instead direct your love toward the preservation of your soul and your honour, which last longer than does the body."
- Geoffroi de Charny, a 14th century knight and author of The Book of Chivalry

“It is not every one that can keep his childhood. Father Benson has, and speaks to children bout the great, big eternal things in a child’s way. The little ones will be delighted to learn these verses by heart, and thus almost unconsciously gain a deep knowledge of Christian doctrine, and a love and habit of Catholic practice.
The Rule takes the little child from the moment it awakes…through his morning prayers; going to church; hearing Mass; saying grace; reciting lessons; practicing obedience; confessing his sins; receiving Holy Communion; evening prayers, and bed. Round them all Father Benson has put the fragrance of verse that will make them sweet and delightful to the child mind.” - from a review in The Catholic World, May 1913.

by John Remond
In the mid-1950s, Songwriter and World War II Veteran John Redmond set out to teach children their catechism using catchy contemporary tunes. Those efforts resulted in two albums: Seven Songs on the Seven Sacraments with The Ten Commandments Song for Little Children, and Twelve Songs on the Apostles Creed.
The idea took hold and these songs are beloved even today as an effective way for children to learn their faith by heart, and have fun while doing it! The principal tenets of our faith, including the Commandments, the Sacraments, The Works of Mercy and the Articles of the Creed are all covered with these songs, which capture the innocence of a bygone era.

Nursery Book of Bible Stories
by Amy Steedman
From the scores of beautiful and thrilling tales in the Bible, celebrated British author Amy Steedman has collected three dozen that are sure to delight young children.
With the confidence of a master storyteller practiced in holding the attention of even the most restless child, she weaves tales of Noah and Moses, Solomon and David, and Daniel in the lion’s den. She leads young listeners to marvel at prophesies of the coming Savior, to be charmed by the gentle goodness of His boyhood, and be dazzled by the scores of miracles that proved He is the Messiah coming to save Israel … and to save, as well, every little child who hears these stories!
Continuing with stories about events after the Resurrection, Miss Steedman takes young readers along with Peter, Paul, and the Apostles as they carry the Good News to the ends of the Earth, and she even gives them a glimpse, with St. John, of the marvels promised for the end of time!
Today, too many religious books for young children trivialize the story of salvation and its many tales of mystery and majesty!
Not these classic read-aloud stories that have proven their worth for over a century now!
These stories are suited to the unlimited understanding of young children; but they’re proportioned as well to the immense powers of imagination which remain uncrippled in little children, leaving them for the meantime still able and willing to believe in the truth of good things, and in marvels they may not yet understand.
Now is the time to read Amy Steedman’s remarkable Bible stories to your child … to plant in their souls these sweet seeds of truth and beauty. Be patient! Not too long from now, you’ll find them blooming into a mature and abiding faith in Jesus.

or Seasoning for Young Folk
by Howard Pyle
Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people, best known for his illustrations of pirates. Pyle is credited with creating the modern stereotype of pirate dress.
His 1885 Pepper and Salt contains eight traditional stories written and illustrated by Pyle. It also contained 24 illustrated poems.
These stories are told by a jolly old jester who lays aside his cap and bells and settles down to entertain the children. His tales are quite as fascinating as the famous ones of Grimm, and they are, besides, entirely new and original, with a whimsy of their own. Besides the stories there are many quaint verses, each pointed with a shrewd and comic moral, and bubbling with so genuine a humor that all children from seven to seventy will chuckle over them and want to memorize them to quote to their friends.
The illustrations, drawn by one of the greatest illustrators who ever lived-the author himself-are both rollicking and lovely, and perfectly complete this gay and clever and altogether delightful book.
