The Catechism of the Council of Trent hardcover - PCP books
The Council of Trent [1545-1563] was a response to the Protestant Reformation. During the sessions of this council, the council fathers clarified and developed key statements and expounded Catholic doctrine, teachings, and practices. By order of the council, then issued and approved by Pope St Pius V, there resulted in the 1566 publication of the Catechism of the Council of Trent (also called the Roman Catechism) in Latin. This catechism became the official manual of popular instruction originally intended for priests. The use of this catechism has been encouraged and urged ever since by various popes, bishops and synods. The catechism gives a fixed and stable plan of instruction to the faithful and follows the Council’s dogmatic definitions in 4 parts: The Apostle’s Creed, The Sacraments, The Ten Commandments, The Lord’s Prayer. Because of the importance of this catechism, PCP, Inc. decided to reprint the Fathers Callan & McHugh’s 1923 translation of this work so as to disseminate its teachings to a wide audience of people seeking to know what the official position of the Church is on dogmatic and moral questions. Our edition is printed with real ink on acid free paper and has an attractive green hard back binding with sewn signatures so the pages will not fall out.  It is made durable for many readings and study. lv + 603 pages: hardcover

Talks to Boys and Girls
by Fr. Winfrid Herbst, S.D.S.

These talks were given by the great storyteller, Fr. Winfrid Herbst, in the early part of the 20th century. So well-received were these talks that it was decided to put them in print so that all Catholic children across America could benefit from them. Parents and teachers alike will also find them useful as fools for teaching the Faith or as a read-aloud.

Contained in this work are talks about Virtues, the Holy Family, the Liturgical Year (and how to observe the different seasons properly), Angels, School Days, and many certain truths found within our Catholic Faith. From each and every story, the child should be able to draw good thoughts, from which they will be directed to make good resolves. Thus these stories will have a salutary influence on the lives of children and help them to grow in goodness; to become model Catholic boys and girls.

The Truth of Papal Claims
There are times when it is our duty to correct our brothers in all charity. In The Truth of Papal Claims observe the skill and wit of turn-of-the-century Cardinal Merry Del Val in fine apologetics. It is a small book that is a quick and enjoyable read and will remind us all of the firm foundation of the Church. Replying to an Anglican theologian living in Rome in 1902, who had challenged this future Cardinal, then Archbishop Rafael Merry del Val responded with this book, providing a profound explanation of the true nature of the Church – founded by Our Lord on the Rock of Peter and his successors, and including all the Apostles with their successors in union with the Pope. These govern the Church which is spread throughout the nations of the world, as living branches on that Vine that is the one Mystical Body of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Catholic and therefore universal. Hardback with Dust Jacket, 2012 xvi 129 pages + 15 pages appendix.

Catholic Apologetics
God, Christianity and the Church
A Course in Religion IV
by
Fr John Laux, M.A.

Fr. John Laux's perennial text Catholic Apologetics presents readers with well-reasoned answers to classic objections against the Catholic faith. This text covers the "motives of credibility": how it is reasonable to believe in God, to believe in Jesus Christ, and to believe in the Catholic Church. Superficial objections to these three core beliefs are decisively and logically refuted in this well-written presentation on apologetics, a powerful tool to help souls hold fast with firm confidence to their Faith.

One of the best apologetics books we have ever seen. Covers the nature of our knowledge, justifications for our belief, proofs for the existence of God, Immortality of the soul, proofs of Revelation, reasonableness of our belief in the Church, primacy of the Pope, etc.

Recommended for 10th grade students.

Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma

Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma
by Fr Ludwig Ott

Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma has been considered as the definitive single volume summary of Catholic dogmatic theology ever since its original publication in German in 1952. This great work by Ludwig Ott presents a comprehensive yet concise outline of the entire system of Catholic doctrine, laying out its sources in Scripture and Tradition as taught by the Magisterium of the Church. The level of authority behind each doctrinal point is indicated and there are frequent references to the teachings of Fathers, Doctors and numerous Saints of the Church.

This definitive work of dogmatics is presented in a language that is both academically rigorous and accessible to laymen. Whilst written for study purposes it is suitable to anyone who wants to go beyond the basics in understanding the faith.

The new edition of the Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Baronius Press is based on the original translation by Dr. Patrick Lynch. It has been fully revised and updated and brings the language into greater harmony with current usage.

Ludwig Ott was born in Neumarkt-St. Helena, Germany in 1906. He was ordained a priest in 1930 and received his doctorate in 1936 after studying under Martin Grabmann, one of the 20th century’s greatest authorities on medieval scholasticism. That same year he became a professor of dogmatics in the Catholic University of Eichstätt, rising to full professor in 1941. From 1960 to 1962 he served as the university’s rector. His studies in the field of dogmatics and the history of scholasticism made him eminently qualified to write the Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma. He also wrote works on the history of medieval spirituality and theology and on the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Ludwig Ott died in Eichstätt in 1985.

The Truth of the Catholic Religion Attested by Holy Scripture and Reason
by Fr J.A. Kilian

“Everyone that shall confess me before men, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven. But he that shall deny me before men, I will also deny him before my Father” (Mt.
10:32-33).”

In this era of disbelief any Catholic not taught how to defend the faith will surely lose it. This book provides a brief, easily-absorbed guide to the absolute bare necessities of apologetics. It gives a breakdown of Holy Scripture, the History of the Early Church, Testimonies of the Early Church Fathers, and the Rise of Protestantism.

Learn to defend these commonly attacked Catholic doctrines, sacraments and truths:

  • Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance
  • Extreme Unction, Holy Orders, Matrimony,
  • Indulgences, Celibacy, Sacramentals,
  • The Four Last Things: Death Judgment, Heaven, and Hell
  • The Truth of the Catholic Religion Attested by the Writings of the Early Fathers
  • A Short Accurate Account of the History of the True Religion
  • The Rise of Protestantism and Historical Evidence of the Truth of Our Divine Religion
  • A Few Thoughts for the Reader’s Consideration

“What is Truth?” Millions of men and women continue to ask this question since Pilate first asked it of Christ. We as Catholics must understand what we believe, why we believe it, and how to defend it. Whether you’re a cradle Catholic, a convert, a parent or a young adult - it has fallen to us to not only grow our own faith but also plant the seeds of faith in the next generation. Defend your soul and the souls of your children by giving them the knowledge to first understand and then defend our glorious Catholic Faith.

Definitive Guide to Catholic Fasting and Abstinence
Definitive Guide to Catholic Fasting and Abstinence
by Matthew R. Plese

This book explains fasting and how it has changed over the centuries in one of the most complete compilations yet written. Unfortunately, most summaries of fasting are either inaccurate or incomplete. However, rather than being a mere academic exercise, the purpose of studying the history of fasting is ultimately to help us rediscover these more ancient practices in an attempt to better observe Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother’s call for penance and reparation for sins.

As Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once remarked, “It is a long-established principle of the Church never to completely drop from her public worship any ceremony, object or prayer which once occupied a place in that worship.” The same may be said for matters concerning either Holy Days of Obligation or fast days. What our forefathers held sacred should remain sacred to us in an effort to preserve our catholicity not only with ourselves but with our ancestors who see God now in Heaven.

The 2nd edition features the following topics which were not covered (or covered only briefly) in the first edition, including detailed explanations of how fasting changed in other countries besides America, including Spain and the Philippines, a detailed explanation of who was exempt from fasting and/or abstinence and how those changes were documented and taught in various catechisms over the centuries. Mr. Plese also cover Easter Week food traditions, highlighting their connection with the Lenten fast, Armenian fasting and abstinence rigors, Maronite fasting guidelines, the heroic example of St. John of the Cross and the Primitive Rule of Pope Innocent IV vs. the mitigated rule approved by Pope Eugenius IV, how the time of the meal on fasting days differed (e.g., sunset for Ember Days but 3 PM for the weekly devotional fasts), and so much more.

Even priests have said that 95% of the book's content is new and was not taught to them!
