The truth about angels — according to the Fathers of the Church
From St. Augustine to John Henry Newman, the greatest among the saints and men of God have lived on familiar terms with the angels; and the Church has always accorded them a very large place in her theology.
Recent theologians have dwelt on dry questions about the nature of the angels, but the early Fathers of the Church, with the memory of Jesus fresh in their minds (and of the angels of whom He spoke often) were fascinated with the energetic action of the angels among men and the ways in which the angels have carried out that mission from the instant of Creation through the time of Jesus; and how they will continue their work even unto the end of time.
From the works of these early Fathers of the Church, the late French Cardinal Jean Daniélou has drawn forth threads of knowledge and wisdom which he has here woven into a lucid and bright tapestry that shows us who the ministering angels really are, and how—in every instant and in every way—they are working for your salvation and mine.
Here you'll find no sentimental cherubs: the Fathers knew that majesty and power cloak actual angels, which is why God gave them the formidable tasks of shepherding not only souls, but entire nations, and the motions of the entire material universe itself.
Open these pages to meet the glorious angels as they were known by the Church's greatest saints and theologians: Origen and Eusebius, and Sts. Basil, Ambrose, Methodius, Gregory of Nyssa, Clement of Alexandria, and John Chrysostom (among others).
Soon you, too, will find yourself on familiar terms with the angels, and they'll begin to play in your life the larger role that God intends them to play.

Stories of Angels in the Bible
by Marigold Hunt

Nine day preparation for spiritual warfare
"At that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy people." Daniel 12:1
Now is the time for Catholics everywhere to consecrate themselves to the angel who stood, millennia ago, against Satan and vanquished him to the deepest region of Hell. Take up this ancient devotion to our most powerful angelic defender.
Over the course of the last century, as we measure the decline of civilization and faith, it is no surprise that the devotion to St. Michael has diminished. The removal of the Leonine prayers as well as St. Michael’s name from the prayers of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass leave little doubt that this glorious victor and powerful intercessor has all but been forgotten by the world.
This little book aggregates the history of devotions that have been offered to St. Michael and presents them once again to be used and spread throughout the world.
This Book Contains:
- Method of the Devotion
- Novena to St. Michael
- Acts of Consecration to St. Michael
- The Chaplet of St. Michael
- Litanies to St. Michael
- Novena to St. Michael
- Michael of the Morning Prayer
- Pope Leo XIII’s Short Prayer to St. Michael
Consecration to St. Michael is a powerful weapon. Consecrating yourself to St. Michael is simply an act of dedicating yourself to his service, for which in return he offers you his help and protection. Such a consecration does not take away from a person’s consecration to Mary or St. Joseph. Consecration to St. Michael only complements these highly recommended practices.

O God, Who in ineffable providence do deign to send Your holy angels for our defense, grant to Your suppliants both to be defended always by their protection and to rejoice in their eternal company. (Collect for the Feast of the Angels Guardian from the Roman Missal)
Of the members of the Church Triumphant, none are perhaps more mysterious than the orders of the heavenly spirits, created before the foundation of the earth and destined for all time "to serve . . . those who shall inherit salvation" (Heb. 1:14). In truth, the angels, who are made to reflect very closely the glory of God, are destined to be the servants of the righteous of mankind in heaven! That is why Mary is Queen of the angels (and she can send them to our aid, if we ask her!). And yet, while we are on earth, some of the most powerful intercessors we have before God are the angels. Divided into nine choirs, they guard both the material world, directing the operations of nature, and individuals and societies, serving as protectors and helpers. Led by St. Michael, the Prince of the Heavenly Host, standing "before the altar holding a golden thurible . . . to offer up the prayers of all the holy ones on the golden altar, which is before the Throne of God" (Apoc. 3:8), the angels partake of the eternal banquet of the celestial liturgy. They act as our guardians, serve as messengers from God to us and from us to God, surround the altar during Mass on earth, and bear the graces of the Mass like incense back to the altar of God on high.
In St. Michael and the Angels, discover all this and more about the holy angels, as well as St. Michael's special role as "Champion of the Church," "Defender of Christians," "Guardian of Purgatory," "Helper of the Sick and Dying," and the "Holy Standard-Bearer" who presents souls before the holy light of God. Find also numerous devotions to the angels, including litanies to our Guardian Angel, to St. Michael, St. Raphael, and St. Gabriel. A special treat is the prayer to our guardian angel asking him to go in our place to attend Mass when we cannot! In all, St. Michael and the Angels is a treasure trove of information and inspiration about the holy angels—our silent partners in the way of salvation.

by Joan Carroll Cruz
In today's age of disbelief and skepticism, even many Christians no longer believe in angels—or in devils. Yet the existence and importance of spiritual, bodiless powers is one of the most basic and prominent features of both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Creation abounds with heavenly guardians and patrons who pray on our behalf and guide us in life—and with demons who desire our ruin through temptations and deceits.
Here, in Angels and Devils, TAN mainstay author Joan Carroll Cruz provides an excellent summary of what the Church has been revealed about angels and devils. She expounds upon the traditional definitions and delineations of the angels and devils and provides practical advice about their relevance in all of our lives, from prayers and devotions to good angels to warnings about the New Age and occult connections to the devils.

Our Friends and Foes
by Dom Bernard-Marie Maréchaux, O.S.B.
“Let us open our eyes to recognize our friends and our enemies. Let us win over the favor of the good angels and keep ourselves on guard against the wicked one. Resist him, Saint James cries out to us, and he will fly from you.” (Dom Bernard-Marie Maréchaux)
Is there a spiritual world around us? If so, who are the beings that make up this world? What is their nature? What is their place in creation? How do they interact among themselves and with us? How are the good spirits our friends, and the bad spirits our foes?
Dom Bernard-Marie Maréchaux asks and answers all these questions in this short but complete tour of the angelic world.
The extraordinary role of these “sublime creatures more imperceptible than the wind and swifter than lightning” will perhaps astonish us. We will realize how “we live immersed in the invisible world, caught up in a double angelic and diabolic current, the object of a bitter struggle for influence between angels and demons.”

Phsyical Apparitions of Angels Throughout Church History
by Dom Bernard-Marie Maréchaux
The Angels are pure spirits. Therefore, they do not have bodies. However, Sacred Scripture is very clear – Angels appeared to men in physical form right throughout the New and Old Testaments.
Would these kinds of apparitions come to an end when the Church began to grow and expand? Not at all, Dom Maréchaux tells us. And he proves this with countless examples of historically recorded instances of Angels appearing to the saints and servants of God down through the ages.
The learned Benedictine brings his readers on a tour of the history of the world and especially of the Church showing that in every age the Angels have condescended to appear to men in a form perceptible to their senses.
Protectors of the budding Church, consolers of the martyrs, guardians of the virgins, companions of the anchorites, custodians of the churches and protectors of the monasteries, readers will discover the fascinating history of how the Angels have visibly accompanied the saints and servants of God from Saint Peter to the children of Fatima and beyond.
Paperback, size 8" x 5.5, 182 pages
by Henri-Marie Boudon
This translation of what may, perhaps, be called the most popular of all Boudon’s works, was undertaken with the desire of furthering the holy object for which it was written, in the way which the venerable author specially recommended; for one of the means, and, indeed, one of the chief means, which he prescribes for spreading devotion to the Holy Angels, is the distribution of well selected books on the subject.” This means,” he writes, “includes almost all the others, since it both gives them honor and teaches it.” It is superfluous to add that the doctrines it contains are not the offspring of the writer’s imagination, or his mere private opinions, but that they rest on the solid basis of Catholic theology, and are in faithful accordance with the teaching of the Church.
