Counsels of Perfection for Christian Mothers

Counsels of Perfection for Christian Mothers
by Monsignor P. Lejeune

"My daughters, you all aspire to perfection. But what is your idea of perfection? Do you not often use this word in a vague and even false sense? It trips so lightly into your conversation that each one prides herself on having a very clear conception of it. I am positive, however, that if I were to ask you to define this word, the response would be a confusion of tongues."

These are the first words of Monsignor Lejeune in his book Counsels of Perfection for Christian Mothers. Written around a hundred years ago, this book of instructions applies to our corrupt modern age at such great urgency. Where mothers are immensely overwhelmed with haste, worry, and confusion brought about by feminism and capitalism, the deeply respected author exhorts mothers to turn to the Mother of mothers, our Blessed Virgin Mary.

The author continues:
"Do you ask for an example of a perfect woman? I shall give it to you from the heavenly hierarchy, by recalling the life of Mary, who, in the matter of perfection, is the nearest approach to God. She it is whom I charge to prove my thesis in such a way that you will be clearly persuaded that sanctity does not at all consist in splendor or magnificence or the glitter of exterior things, but rather in an interior principle which animates the most ordinary actions, and communicates to them an almost inestimable value. Consider for a moment the life of Mary......."

Read for yourself and begin to rediscover your vocation as a mother and a wife according to the will of God.  Includes planning pages for My Rule of Life, Daily Schedule and more.

Character Calendar

Character Calendar
by Sr Mary Fidelis & Sr Mary Charitas

This pocket-size volume contains a wealth of spiritual guidance through daily devotions to the saint or feast of the day.  Originally written in 1931 for upper grade school children by a pair of Notre Dame School Sisters, this book was later updated to align with the General Roman Calendar of 1954.

Beginning with a brief introduction to the saint of the day, augmented by excerpts from the Imitation of Christ and from the Mass for the day, as well as an ideal to ponder and an "action item", this is a wonderful way to focus on the virtues of each of the saints, and thereby to make our lives an imitation of theirs.

Treasury of Indulgenced Prayers
Treasury of Indulgenced Prayers
by James A. Varni

Treasury of Indulgenced Prayers was originally published under the title “The Treasury of Indulgenced Ejaculations.” The first edition was based on the “Raccolta,” long the official collection of indulgenced prayers and good works. But with the appearance of “Preces et Pia Opera,” issued by the Vatican Press and now the only authentic collection of indulgenced prayers, it was evident, due to the changes in indulgences granted, the omission of some prayers, and the inclusion of other prayers, that a new edition of “The Treasury of Indulgenced Ejaculations” was most imperative.

The Imitation of Christ leather hardcover

The Imitation of Christ leather hardcover
by Thomas à Kempis

The Imitation of Christ by Thomas À Kempis needs no introduction. For more than five centuries it has been the most popular spiritual book second only to the Sacred Scriptures. It presents the fundamental principles of the spiritual life. The Christian soul is invited to follow Christ Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. As we study its contents we are convinced that without that Way there is no going, without that Truth there is no knowing, without that Life there is no real living.

This translation by Bishop Challoner, who revised the Douay-Rheims Bible in the 1740's, is the most beautiful and edifying available. The Imitation of Christ speaks to the soul of every Christian, reminding him of the brevity of earthly joy compared to the eternity of happiness with God. This spiritual classic belongs to every Christian library.

Mary In Our Life
Mary In Our Life
Our Lady in Doctrine and Devotion
by Fr William G Most

For the first time in the history of Marian writing, here is a book that co-ordinates and integrates the dogmatic truths underlying devotion to Mary with a solid, unsentimental, and balanced application of these truths to the life of the soul.

The author lucidly demonstrates that, since God has given Mary an all-pervading place in His scheme for the redemption of man, it follows that if we wish to grow in love of God—the goal of all spiritual striving—we will give Mary a corresponding place in our soul-life.

This book shows us how to achieve such fusion of God-centered and Mary-informed spirituality. It provides a basic orientation in ascetic principles and explains the classic steps in spiritual and mystical growth, drawing always on the texts of Scripture, the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, the great commentators, and the modern papal pronouncements.

OUR LADY'S PART IN OUR SPIRITUAL LIFE
This is a fundamental text of Marian spirituality, for private study, for class and study-club use, for aid in spiritual direction. It is at once simple, clear, and logical, yet fortified by rich documentation and reference material. With Index and questions for discussion.

Cultivating the Spiritual Life
Cultivating the Spiritual Life
The Beginnings of the Life of Grace & Mysticism as Told by the Saints
by Fr. Adolphe Tanquerey, SS, DD

This work has been constructed as a daily companion to deepen and fortify the foundation of your interior life as taught by the tradition of the Church.

Cultivating the Spiritual Life is intended to serve as a day-by-day guide for you to live a devout life in the world to point the way to an enlightened, well-balanced, and authentic piety.

Taken from the writings primarily of that great 20th century master of the spiritual life, Fr. Adolphe Tanquerey, and further enhanced with writings from various doctors of the Church, saints, mystics, and theologians, Cultivating the Spiritual Life is a daily companion for those searching to grow closer to Christ by understanding how the spiritual life works in us. The purpose of this work is not to transcend any particular school or preference of spirituality, but rather to show what is universally common to the Catholic spiritual life and what each soul must know to succeed in his own earthly pilgrimage to God.

Fr. Tanquerey composed a complete and orderly summary of questions on the spiritual life which can serve as a devotional treatise for spiritual reading by his clear, lively, practical, and careful writing that serves to help foster a truly devout life while avoiding being dry and being controversial.

Cultivating the Spiritual Life should be read by taking the teachings of the Church as a whole and finding the common principles and rules for strengthening the basic fundamentals that the Church has always taught. Fr. Tanquerey wrote those for all those “who are seeking to live a thoroughly Christian life and thus fit themselves to be living, breathing models of Christ in the world today by a deep interior life.”

The Doors of Silence
The Doors of Silence
Profound and Brief Meditations
by an Anonymous Carthusian Monk

Key points of examination to find inner peace and foster union with God.

These brief words of advice are a summation of the lessons learned by an anonymous Carthusian monk over the course of his monastic life. The advice is precise, profound and eternally valuable. If you've been looking for a way to quickly remove inner turmoil, find peace of mind and soul, and develop reliance on God, this small text will be a profound aid.

"Consent to forget the world, the universe, and yourself. If you hesitate to lose your life in Him and for Him, go no further. As much as it is possible for you, in exact obedience and perfect charity, you must avoid four things which are major obstacles to interior silence, and which render habitual contemplation impossible: interior noise, interior discussions, obsession, and worries about yourself. This being done, you will have passed through the doors of silence."

The Month of St Joseph

The Month of St Joseph
by Rev M. de Langalerie

St. Teresa of Avila tells us, “I took for my advocate and lord the glorious Saint Joseph and commended myself earnestly to him...he gave me greater blessings than I could ask of him. I do not remember even now that I have ever asked anything of him which he has failed to grant.”

This hidden saint, the blessed foster-father of our Lord and protector of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a powerful intercessor for us, as well as a model of perfect virtue.  The bible records not a single word of his, yet we know that in the holy house at Nazareth, the young Jesus—the Word made Flesh—was subject to him. Through this series of daily meditations for the month of March, we may increase our devotion to this great saint while also making a fruitful use of the days of Lent.

As patron not only of fathers and of the worker, but of the universal church, all of us—men and women, old and young—would do well to look to him in our every need.

The Imitation of Christ
The Imitation of Christ
by Thomas à Kempis

After the Bible, The Imitation of Christ is the all-time favorite book of Catholics throughout the world. And of the English editions, none can equal this inspiring translation by Bishop Richard Challoner.

This book speaks to the soul of every true Christian, reminding us of the fleeting nature of earthly joy as opposed to the eternity of happiness with God.

The guide of the saints since it first appeared in 1418, it was the sole spiritual reading of St. Therese of Lisieux, who loved it and knew it by heart.

Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange asserted that the true mysticism of which it speaks is accessible to all, if they are willing to follow the way of humility, the cross, continual prayer, and docility to the Holy Ghost.
