Child Of Many Wonders
A Story of the Divine Infant Jesus of Prague
by Brother Gerard Hagemann, C.S.C.

Around 1628, during the Thirty Years’ War, a small statue of the Infant Jesus was given to a Carmelite monastery in Prague. The monastery was soon abandoned when an army invaded the city. In 1637, Father Cyril found the broken statue and heard the words, “The more you honor Me, the more I will bless you.” Today, many people visit Prague to see the statue, and replicas of the statue can be found in churches and homes around the world. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of those who have had a devotion to the Infant Jesus of Prague. Like them, we can honor Jesus by our life, by our good example, and by our prayers.

"Have pity on me, and I will have pity on you. Give me my hands, and I will give you peace. The more you honour me, the more I will bless you."

The little child Jesus is King of the Universe. The Holy Infancy of God is an often unremarked-upon and yet wholly integral part of the mystery of the Incarnation. Not only did the Infinite God become a finite man, but He became a little baby, and a little boy. No devotion gives more honor and glory to this Little King than the devotion to the Infant Jesus of Prague.

While its origins are shrouded in mystery, this little statuette has its origins in Spain, with some saying it even belonged to St. Teresa of Avila. Taken to Bohemia by a Spanish noblewoman who married a Bohemian, the little statue of God was later given by her daughter, Princess Polyxena von Lobkowicz, to a Carmelite monastery in Prague. Cast aside in a rubbish heap by the conquering Protestant King of Sweden, it remained there for seven years, with its hands broken off, until one Fr. Cyrillus found the statue and returned it to a place of honor. Since then, the famous devotion has only grown, and the Little King has conquered the hearts of many with His glorious rule of charity. May he conquer your heart too.
