A Sign of Contradiction
A Sign of Contradiction
As the Master, So the Disciple
by Fr. John Hugo

Fr. Onesimus Lacouture was a Jesuit who had the great gift of being a masterful director of souls. Being a Jesuit formed in the old mold of true Ignatian spirituality and deeply affected by the so-called “French School” of Cardinal Berulle, St. John Eudes, and St. Louis Marie de Montfort, his retreats, given to over 6000 American and Canadian priests, produced extraordinary results. His most well known disciple and good friend, Fr. Hugo, has produced for posterity, the Notes from those Ignatian retreats as given by Fr. Lacouture and subsequently by himself and many other priests.

A Sign of Contradiction is Fr. Hugo’s apologia for the work of Fr. Lacouture and the “spiritual movement” that grew spontaneously from the ardent, enlightened, and effective preaching of the retreats. He describes the movement, its opponents and its supporters as well as the revelatory doctrines so convincingly presented by Fr. Lacouture.

This book is spiritually motivating, historically informative, and powerfully illuminating in regard to the condition of the Church and the faithful in North America during the mid-twentieth century. His other works include Applied Christianity and The Gospel of Peace.

Applied Christianity
Applied Christianity
by Fr. John J. Hugo

This is the second of three books written by Fr. John J. Hugo concerning the great 20th century spiritual retreat master, Fr. Onesimus Lacouture S.J. and his work. The first was The Gospel of Peace, and the third to be re-issued is entitled A Sign of Contradiction.

Fr. Lacouture was a Jesuit who had the great gift of being a masterful director of souls. Being a Jesuit formed in the old mold of true Ignatian spirituality and deeply affected by the so-called “French School” of Berulle, St.

The Notes are entitled Applied Christianity and few spiritual writers of the 20th century have put in such clear and lucid language a precise (and practical) explanation of the true nature of a Christian life. This work will be compared to the works of such great writers on the spiritual life as St. John Eudes, Abbot Dom Marmion, Dom Chautard, St. Ignatius of Loyola and others.

The Admirable Heart of Mary
The Admirable Heart of Mary
The Admirable Heart of Mary
by St John Eudes

This was the first book written on the devotion to the Sacred Hearts. As such, it is a basic work in modern spirituality, one of the great devotional treatises which have shaped the history of Catholic prayer life. The characteristic gifts of the devout writer, his elevation of thought and directness of expression, are admirably exemplified in the beloved pages of his Marian masterpiece. The translators are to be warmly thanked for the fidelity and felicity of their English version; it keeps remarkably the spirit and the simplicity of Saint John s original work.

Baptism

Baptism
Man's Contract with God
by Saint John Eudes

Saint John Eudes wrote many books and is best known today as the Apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In fact, he composed the Masses for those feast days. One of his most eloquent and powerful works is this treatise on baptism originally entitled, Le contrat de l’homme avec Dieu par le Saint Baptême.

This treatise is one of the clearest and most lucid explanations of the essential nature of the sacrament ever composed. Due to his Jesuit training and his great sanctity, this saint is able to make such a clear and orderly presentation of the effects of this solemn contract between God and his children that it is hard to imagine anything better ever being written on the subject.

St. John spent years with the Oratorians (founded by St. Philip Neri), and he was also the founder of two religious orders and an experienced missionary and preacher. He knew how to speak clearly and effectively to both Catholics and non-Catholics. Reading this compelling presentation of God’s great plan for us, elucidating the contract that we have entered into by our reception of the sacrament of baptism, and the responsibility that falls upon both God and ourselves for fulfilling our respective ends of that contract is a source of tremendous grace to the reader.

Although not intended as a catechism on baptism, it is strongly recommended that any teenager read it before confirmation and that any adult convert read it before their entrance into the church, as there is no better explanation we have ever seen of the practical (not theological) nature and effect of baptism. Upon reading this book you will come to a deeper understanding of why there can be no salvation outside of the Catholic Church and without sacramental baptism.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Sacred Heart of Jesus
by St John Eudes

Saint John Eudes was born at Ri, a country parish near Caen, Normandy, in 1601. Endowed with extraordinary talents and filled with burning zeal for the salvation of souls, he devoted 50 years of life, until his death in 1680, to the preaching of missions and to the organization of ecclesiastical seminaries. He founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, generally known as the Eudist Fathers, for missionary and seminary work; the Order of Our Lady of Charity with its two observances of the Refuge and of the Good Shepherd; the Society of the Most Admirable Heart for lay persons aspiring to perfection in the world; and lastly, Confraternities of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary for the propagation among the faithful of the devotion, of which he was the first apostle. He wrote the first Mass and Office for the special feast in honor of the Sacred Heart and of the Holy Heart of Mary, which he established thirty years before the revelations of the Sacred Heart to Saint Margaret Mary.

For those who relish a rich interior life, Loreto Publications is delighted to provide you with the seraphic insights of Saint John Eudes, one of the greatest spiritual writers of all time. Known as the apostle of devotion to the Sacred and Admirable Hearts of Jesus and Mary, John Eudes is very much needed in this apathetic age. An atrophic, and chilling frigidity of soul seems to be threatening the very lifeblood of Catholic altruism. Although the sacramental lifeblood of grace, with all of its divine efficacy, is inexhaustible in its source, even still, the maternal hands of the Lord s holy mother, who longs to dispense the higher gifts of God with such largesse, can be tied on account of our lukewarmness.

Behold this Heart which has loved man so much, Jesus said to Saint Margaret Mary as He unveiled that pulsing reality to her enraptured eye. This is the Heart of Our Savior that was pierced by a lance. This is the Heart Saint John Eudes presents to us in the unforgettable exposé.

Like Saint John the Apostle, Father Eudes had the privilege of what could be nothing less than direct intimate access to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. One can only conclude after reading this book that here was a man driven by the Holy Spirit to cast fire upon the earth with the pen of a scrivener lost in divine abandon. God is wonderful in His saints, and with holy gusto Loreto seconds the accolade given to Saint John Eudes by a grateful generation: the wonder of his age.
