The Crusader on Vacation
The Crusader on Vacation
Nine Weeks of Vacation Readings For Children of the Eucharistic Crusade
by Anonymous

This beautifully illustrated book is aimed at members of this Eucharistic Crusade while they are on summer vacation, a time when the progress made in the spirit of the Crusade during the school year can be all too easily lost. For every week of vacation, there is a specific focus – sometimes the four elements of the Crusade motto, sometimes other more general topics like the Mass, the Priesthood, virtues and defects… Each day provides a short reading to deepen Crusaders’ knowledge and a beautiful story to give them examples they can imitate, thereby stimulating progress rather than regression.

God hears the innocent prayers of children, and their sacrifices and Communions are very pleasing to Him. Therefore, it is in the interests of the Church and society for as many children as possible to belong to the Eucharistic Crusade and for the spirit of this same Crusade to be kept alive in these young souls exposed to so much more dissipation and danger during summer vacation.

By the grace of God, this book will assist in this task.

Expositio Missae
Expositio Missae
The Mysteries of the Mass Explained
by St Bonaventure

The Mass is a central and essential part of the Christian life, the very source and summit of our devotion and piety. Instituted by Jesus Himself at the Last Supper and faithfully passed on by the apostles and their successors, it is not merely a memorial of the passion, death, and resurrection of our Savior, but a true participation in His one redeeming sacrifice. It does not merely praise and invoke God, but causes Him to be really, truly, and substantially present. It is through the Mass that we become closest to Jesus, and mystically partake in His passion, death, and resurrection. It is through the Mass that we receive the “Bread of the Angels,” which imparts to our fragile human nature the eternal life of God Himself.

Saint Bonaventure’s Expositio Missae (“Exposition of the Mass”) offers inspiring and touching insight into the multiple layers of meaning and symbolism embodied within the sacred actions of the Eucharistic celebration. Also offered in this volume are some of the Seraphic Doctor’s beautiful and passionate prayers, including those to be said before Mass, before the reception of Holy Communion, and after Mass. As Saint Bonaventure says, with this book, you will be able to “hear the most holy Mass with the greatest possible devotion and reverence.”

How to Pray Well
by Very Rev. William Gier, S.V.D.

St Charbel Makhlouf
St Charbel Makhlouf
One of the Greatest Saints of Our Time
by Anonymous

St. Charbel (1828 - 98), a Maronite Rite Catholic religious, priest and hermit of Bekaa-Kafra, Lebanon, is considered by many to be the masculine counterpart of the Little Flower of Lisieux and one of the greatest saints of our times. He led a hidden life of profound virtue, humble labour and ardent fervour for the Holy Eucharist.

He left home at the age of twenty-three to follow the examples of two uncles by entering the monastic life of the Lebanese Maronite Order (a religious order within the Catholic Maronite Rite that includes most Catholics in Lebanon). He was profoundly devoted to the Holy Rosary and to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which he said daily at 11:00AM. Why so late? Because he knelt before the Blessed Sacrament from midnight the night before (yes, eleven hours!) to prepare for Mass!

His obedience was absolutely perfect, going even so far as to obey the lay labourers at the monastery. His fasting and penances were severe. He separated himself from the world entirely, from his first entrance to the novitiate. His only contact with the outside world was at the request of his superiors, orders which he followed without question. His entire life, without the slightest exception, was completely supernatural. The stories of his heroic virtues, told by many who knew him, are fascinating enough especially since they take place in a land that Catholics are not much accustomed to thinking of as Catholic - Lebanon. It is even more interesting as he was a miracle worker in life and in death - the miracles were practically non - stop.

Fr. Charbel suffered a stroke on December 16, 1898, during the Offertory of the Liturgy...the high point of his day - his entire life was an offertory. He was reciting the prayer of the Holy Liturgy of the Maronite Rite: "Father of Truth, behold Your Son, a sacrifice pleasing to You. Accept this offering of Him who died for me..." As he fell to the floor, he kept his hands safely clasped around the Holy Eucharist. His companion, Fr. Makarios Al-Mishmeshani the Hermit, and some other monks helped him to his cell, where he continued to repeat that prayer until his death on Christmas Eve, 1898.

From April 22-August 14, 1950, exactly 350 miracles were recorded at his tomb...20 of the cured were Moslems. MANY, MANY more were recorded as his body remained perfectly intact (supple skin, flexible joints, no odour) for over 75 years after his death and exuded a miraculous liquid that healed a great number of crippled and sick people and converted many others, including Moslems to the True Faith. His casket rotted, he did not. The author of the book warns that the miraculous events surrounding the Saint's life are so great, that it is easy to lose sight of the essential - his holiness.

The Sacred Scriptures tell us that war is a punishment for sin. Consequently, sanctity is the ultimate solution to war. While the Middle East and specifically St. Charbel's beloved Lebanon has recently been torn asunder, let us all invoke him as we earnestly pray for peace and the conversion of non-believers...intentions dear to the heart of St. Charbel.

The Life of Matt Talbot
The Life of Matt Talbot
by Sir Joseph A Glynn

What did alcoholics do before there was Alcoholics Anonymous?

Let us consider a few parts of this holy man's life: "He was not quarrelsome when drunk, but went quietly home to bed when the public-houses had closed for the night. No matter how much drink he had taken the night before, he was up in time for his work, which started at 6 a.m., and left the house clean and tidy in his person. He acquired the habit of taking the Holy Name in vain and of using strong language when talking with his fellow workers, and he began to neglect the Sacraments, though he went to Mass on Sundays. His prayers consisted of blessing himself when he got out of bed in the morning, as he was, usually, too drunk to say any prayers going to bed. For two, if not three, years before his conversion he had not been to the Sacraments of Penance or the Holy Eucharist. "The picture which Matt Talbot presents to us at this period is that of a young fellow going fast on the road to ruin; the craving' for drink gradually mastering him; the duties of his religion almost completely neglected; and the duties to his parents entirely ignored. The picture is dark, but it is not all black. All his troubles came from the one sin-indulgence in drink. He had no other vice and his moral character was irreproachable."

From his early teens until age 28 Matt's only aim in life had been liquor. But from that point forward, his only aim was God. Matt became increasingly deout. He lived a life of prayer, fasting and service, trying to model himself on the sixth century Irish monks. Though he has not been formally recognized as a saint, Matt Talbot may be considered a patron of men and women struggling with alcoholism.

Catholic Tales For Boys and Girls 1
Catholic Tales For Boys and Girls 1
by Caryll Houselander

Tales about Catholic children to form your own little ones in holy wisdom and piety.

Caryll Houselander is best known for the intensity of her vision of the suffering Christ and His immeasurable love for us, a theme that she frequently spoke of with breathtaking luminosity in her many books about Him.

Few know, however, of the many remarkable stories she wrote for Catholic children — delightful tales that are simple but not shallow. Indeed, like her books for adults, they manifest a tender love of Christ and His little ones not commonly found among us these days.

Here are twelve of Houselander's best tales, charmingly illustrated with Renée George's lively drawings of pirates and princesses, castles and kings.

Through the tale of Jack and Jim, even young children will grasp the meaning of Christ's suffering; in Racla the Gypsy, they'll discover the charity which is at the heart of the Eucharist; in the The Curé's Guest, they'll see how Christ makes up for the sins of others.

All the stories touch on Catholic themes, but these tales are not really catechetical. Yes, they do take for granted that Catholicism — especially prayer and the Mass — plays a large role in the lives of these children, but they do something more . . . and more important.

Tale after tale introduces children to the tender love that Jesus has for each of them, and to the fire of love for Him that can burn in the hearts of Catholics — even in the hearts of little ones like themselves.

There is no better gift you can give to a young child.

The Christmas of the Eucharist
The Christmas of the Eucharist
Selection from Father Faber
by Rev. John Fitzpatrick, O.M.I.

This is a Christmas book about the Blessed Sacrament.

When, at the good tidings of great joy, the little ones crowd to the Crib, going over, as it were, and going back to Bethlehem, to see the gracious mystery which has come to pass, we elders turn rather to the Tabernacle, to find there once again, new-born in mystic birth and wrapped in the swaddling-clothes of the sacramental species, Him for whom there is really no far-away and no long-ago.

These pages will help to penetrate us, while kneeling there in lowly adoration, with the spirit of the dweller in that ‘house of bread’, and to make us, in very truth, as little, children once again.

Saint Margaret of Hungary: A Tale of Vows and Sanctity
by E. Virginia Newell

St. Margaret of Hungary, OP (Margit in Hungarian; January 27, 1242 – January 18, 1270) was a Dominican nun and the daughter of King Béla IV of Hungary and Maria Laskarina. The 8th child of ten, she was the younger sister of St. Kinga of Poland (Kunegunda) and St. Yolanda of Poland and, through her father, the niece of the famed St. Elizabeth of Hungary. She was a member of the illustrious Arpad family who gave many great rulers and saints to the world over 300 years. Among them are the famous King St. Stephen crowned in 1000 AD as well as St. Irene, and two other St. Elizabeths.

Margaret was born during the Mongol invasion of Hungary (1241–42). Her parents vowed that if Hungary was liberated from the Mongols, they would dedicate the child to religion. The three  year old Margaret was entrusted by her parents to the Dominican monastery at Veszprém in 1245. Six years later she was transferred to the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin founded by her parents on Nyulak Szigete (Rabbit Island) near Buda (today Margaret Island, named after her, and a part of Budapest; the ruins of the monastery can still be seen). She spent the rest of her life there, dedicating herself to religion and opposing all attempts of her father to arrange a political marriage for her with King Ottokar II of Bohemia.

She lived in total humility, engaging in the most menial tasks even in the winter when her hands bled from the cold. She constantly fasted and refused nice clothes and royal comforts, remarking that she preferred the odor of sanctity when dead to smelling sweet only when alive. She spent her days in prayer, in devotion to the Eucharist, and caring for the poor, lavishing on them whatever gifts her royal family sent her.

This is her story.

Daily Bible Reading With the Church
Daily Bible Reading With the Church
by Benedict R. Avery, O.S.B.

The life of every Christian soul on it’s pilgrimage through this vale of tears must be fed primarily on two foods. The origin of these two foods is the two trees in the Eden of our first parents, of which trees one was allowed to their use and one was forbidden. The Tree of Life was intended to feed the life that God had breathed into Adam and Eve. We now have a replacement for the food of that tree. That food is God Himself as the Bread of Life in the Eucharist.  Adam’s disobedience regarding the command not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was the cause of mankind’s fall from grace. Now that man knows of evil, God has given us something to teach us to distinguish the evil from the good. Of this tree we also have a new bread to eat, as Jesus himself told us, “Not by bread alone (temporal bread) doth man live, but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God.” The word of God is two things, scripture and Jesus—especially in the Eucharist. These two foods are essential to us to sustain our life of grace that will, hopefully, lead us to eternal life.

Daily reading in the scriptures is the best way for a Christian to partake of this bread that God has given us. On Palm Sunday, 1978, Brother Francis gave us this daily schedule. Some have followed it ever since, and can testify to the sweetness and depth that this practice can bring to one’s spiritual life.

Douay Rheims version of the English bible as the very best translation available from which to read scripture. It corresponds more accurately to the original Vulgate than any of the more recent translations and the language is most beautiful.

The Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent
The Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent
Translated and Introduced by Rev. H. J. Schroeder

This Council of Trent (1545-1563) spanned the pontificates of five popes and shone as a beacon to all the world, condemning errors of the Protestant Reformation and making pronouncements on a vast number of Church doctrines and disciplines.

In this volume of The Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent, originally published in 1941, Fr. H. J. Schroeder, O.P.,  provides an exact translation of the texts promulgated by the council and elucidates its momentous accomplishments. Readers will find the text of the documents as here presented refreshingly clear and definitive, as characteristic of the Church's official pronouncements. Covered within are the official decrees on such elements of Catholic doctrine as:
  • Transubstantiation of the Eucharist
  • The nature of the Mass
  • Penance
  • Extreme Unction
  • Matrimony as a sacrament
  • Holy Orders
  • Original Sin
  • Veneration of saints, Relics, and Our Lady
  • And far more!

Footnotes with Scriptural references are provided throughout the text, as well as internal cross-references between different parts of the council's decrees. Lovers of Church history, the development of doctrine, and Catholic truth will not want to miss this magnificent translation of one of the greatest of the 21 ecumenical councils of the Catholic Church.

The Order of Melchisidech
The Order of Melchisedech
A Defense of the Catholic Priesthood
by Michael Davies

On 30 June 1968, pope Paul VI pronounced his Credo in which the doctrine of the Sacrifice of the Mass "celebrated by the priest in the Person of Christ in virtue of the power he received in the Sacrament of Order" was very clearly, unambiguously, and correctly expressed. Twelve days earlier, Pope Paul VI had signed the Apostolic Constitution in which he approved and imposed the new ritual of the ordination of deacon, priest, and bishop. In this book the author examines the new rite of ordination to the priesthood and exposes its differences with the former one used in the Roman rite for a number of centuries, enjoying the highest authority.

There can be no doubt of the validity of the New Rite but there are certain features which the author deplores. A number of prayers and ceremonies have been suppressed which, in the Old Rite, served clearly to express the most essential character and duty of priesthood: to offer the Eucharistic Sacrifice of the Mass. This is a sign of a tendency which can be observed in other official liturgical innovations (not to mention illegal ones). It is a matter of great concern for many Catholics that this and similar things are done at a time when the sacrificial character of what is now commonly called the "celebration of the Eucharist" is questioned or even denied by many who do not leave the Catholic Church.

Mr. Davies gives an impressive exposition of the facts and the meaning he attaches to them in the light of Trent, the Pontifical letter Apostolicae Curae of Pope Leo XIII, other official documents, and also the Canterbury Declaration on Ministry and Ordination in the Anglican and Catholic Churches. He rightly rejects the latter completely as a totally ambiguous document.

This is a rich and scholarly book which should be in the hands of all who study post-conciliar developments in the official Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Christ.

The Blessed Eucharist
The Blessed Eucharist
Our Greatest Treasure
by Fr. Michael Mueller, C.Ss.R.

In The Blessed Eucharist, Father Michael Mueller describes how Christ's love for us moved Him to create this most beautiful Sacrament. He explains why Our Lord veils Himself in the appearance of bread—a garment so humble He is little known, little loved, even neglected and insulted.

Fr. Mueller helps the reader discover what a treasure the Sacrament is, sharing countless compelling accounts of miracles involving the Eucharist and quotations from Scripture and the Saints reflecting the virtues that can be obtained from Communion worthily received and the consequences of an unworthy reception of Our Lord. He instructs the reader on how to best prepare for receiving the Sacrament and how to properly offer thanksgiving afterwards.

The Blessed Eucharist awakens a deeper awareness of the incredible gift that God has given us in His Presence in the Eucharist, allowing us to embrace all the wondrous fruits this Sacrament has to offer.
