The Traditional Catholic Feast Day Dishes of Many Lands
by Katherine Burton and Helmut Ripperger
Two well-known writers here join forces to describe the special and traditional Catholic feast day dishes of many lands. Whereas the the variety in Christmas, New Year, and Easter observances is known, less familiar are the special foods for "Mothering Sunday," "Maundy Thursday," "Lamas Day." Few know that the origin of the veal cutlet is attributed to St. Ambrose, who thus prepared the meat he gave to the poor; that the favorite sweetmeat of St. Francis of Assisi was Frangipane; or that in Italy a cake called "Sphinx" is traditionally served on St. Joseph's Day. We learn the forgotten origin of many well-known dishes, and the family is provided with numerous recipes to restore these wonderful traditional customs. With a table of movable feasts.

by Joanna Bogle
When it was first published in 1986 A Book of Feasts and Seasons was the first popular attempt to recapture the lost traditions surrounding our major feasts and festivals. Since then it has gone through many printings, and has become a well loved source book all over the world. For every occasion of the Christian Year - from the traditional celebration of Michaelmas and Martinmas to making an Advent Wreath, from wassailing to the full story of St Wenceslaus - A Book of Feasts and Seasons remains an essential part of the family library.
In today's fast moving world it gets harder and harder for people to keep in touch with their Christian history and customs. This book allows families, schools and church groups to do just that, and to have fun while doing it. Joanna Bogle is a well-known Catholic journalist and broadcaster.

Pious Recreations
by St Therese of Lisieux
Over a period of about three years toward the end of her life, St. Therese of Lisieux (1873-1897) was asked by her Carmelite superiors to compose eight theatrical pieces for special occasions in her convent. She did not consider them mere trivial amusements. On the contrary, Therese invested herself wholeheartedly in the writing and performance of these little dramas, which provided a welcome opportunity to articulate her growing spiritual insights and share them with her religious community. Here we find echoes of her great themes, some where developed at greater length than anywhere else in her writings: Mary of Nazareth and Joan of Arc, humility and the little way, confidence and love, and so much more.
In the present volume, for the first time, all eight of her plays (or pious recreations, as they are sometimes called in the French) are published together in their entirety for English-speaking readers. They open a new window onto the message of the church's youngest Doctor. Also included is a masterful general introduction by the noted Theresian expert, Bishop Guy Gaucher, O.C.D., as well as individual introductions to each play explaining it in context and significance.

by Hilaire Belloc
The media's manipulation of thought among the masses, which Belloc warned about in 1917, has grown exponentially since. Nevertheless, he believed that the free press, no matter how hampered by the enemy, would attract influential thinkers. Its writers will be more eloquent, for they shall have a cause that is not enslaved to money and its pathetic and corrosive cancer of the soul commonly known as mediocrity.
