Letters to a Young Man on the Dominican Order
by Fr Paul Duchaussoy, O.P., translated by Fr Bede Jarrett, O.P.

Originally published in 1909, the following pages on St. Dominic and his spirit, as embodied in the Order which he founded, were written in the form of letters-and there are ten of them-to an inquiring young friend, by the Very Rev. Père Duchaussoy, O.P. With his kind permission, they have been translated from the French, in which they were originally written, by the Rev. Fr. Bede Jarrett , B.A., S.T.L., of the same Order.

To these letters another-as an appendix-has been added, at my suggestion, by the pen of a Sister of the Congregation of Siena, whose motherhouse is at Stone, on the life, spirit, and work of the nuns of the Second and Third Orders, the first-born children of St. Dominic. A Chapter will also be found on Tertiaries living in the world.

A few editorial notes have also been added. It is hoped that this brochure will meet a long felt want in the Dominican literature of the three English-speaking Provinces, answering, as it does, briefly and succinctly, certain questions often put to the members of the Order of both sexes in the three countries in which the English tongue prevails. - Foreword by Fr. John Procter, O.P.

The Wine of Cana

The Wine of Cana
by Fr Ludger Grun

A Parish Mission for Couples

From the foreword:
This is not a book of "A Thousand Tips for a Happy Marriage." There are many books that one can find with many suggestions and valuable pieces of advice, but most of them lack a truly Christian basis and do not treat marriage as a Sacrament. This book would like to invite its reader on a journey. On this path we will look at the beginning of the world, focus on the end and completion of creation as well as its central theme, and what part the Christian married couple plays in it. All this will serve the true understanding of marriage as a sacrament. Like a traveller, we want to study the map before we start walking. A traveller has to make this journey on his own, one step at a time, in order for him to keep moving forward and reach his destination.

With this said, it would be fatal to ask of this book to give some kind of ideal recipe to attain every goal today and now. It’s also not meant to give one partner the power to tell the other how one is supposed to act. Here too this applies: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone!" It is rather intended as a great encouragement for the married couple, when they see how Jesus and Mary come to their aid, what great connection their marriage bears and what wonderful chances their marriage gives them to live in the Kingdom of God.

This book should also be a reminder that marriage is appointed for the glorification of God throughout life; in the sacrament of marriage the spouses pray, "Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come." If they try to follow this precept, then these words of Christ apply: "For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

The Dutiful Child
The Dutiful Child
by Rev. F. X. Wetzel.

First printed in German in 1898. From the first chapter, “God looks down with love upon a child saying its prayers. Good people rejoice at the sight, and it has been known that sinners have been converted by the words of prayer which they have heard fall from the lips of a little one.”

This book provides short stories of children and how they act in different scenarios with their parents whether it’s through praying or understanding consequences to actions. In The Dutiful Child, parents either learn from their children, or their children learn from them. As children of God, readers will understand how He would act as our Father based on what we would ask of or need from Him.

In total, there are 14 chapters from which to learn, and both young and old can benefit from this book.

Mamma Margherita

Mamma Margherita
Model Mother
by Fr Augustin Auffray, SDB

“The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”, goes the old saying. This has rarely been so true as in the case of Mamma Margherita Bosco, mother of the great apostle of youth, Saint John Bosco.

A peasant by birth, Margherita already demonstrated virtue, courage and common sense as a young girl. After her husband’s death, she single-handedly raised her three boys while running the family farm. Then, when her beloved John called on her help for his budding Oratory in Turin, she generously answered his call. She once more became a mother – this time of hundreds of boys in Turin.

Partly using material from his monumental biography of Don Bosco and partly relying on the Saint’s memoirs, Father Auffray paints as complete a picture as possible of this great woman.

Father Auffray wrote this book in order to give mothers an example they could follow and in order to encourage them in the difficulties inherent in their sacred task of raising children.

“We offer to all women who feel in their heart the desire to be “mothers of a holy people” this model of energy, abnegation and Christian spirit in the education of her children”. Father Augustin Auffray (Preface)

The Polite Pupil
The Polite Pupil
For the Use of Catholic Parochial and High Schools
by the Brothers of Mary

First printed in 1905.

From the Preface:
With pleasure we present this little book to Christian educators, to be placed in the hands of their pupils. The compilations of the work has been a labor of love, growing out of experience, and prompted by the earnest desire of seeing our Catholic pupils stand in the foremost rank among the cultured and refined of our times.

It is not, indeed, an exhaustive treatise on social forms and rules of etiquette, for the use of those that move in the exclusive circles of high society, but rather a compendium of seeming trifles: a multitude of little things regarding the look, the tone of voice, a charitable act, or a proof of self-denial or humility, a token of satisfaction or of gratitude, a kind and loving word. These may appear trifles if considered singly; but, taken collectively, they are the essentials of perfection, the ornaments of virtue--true politeness.

The Wife Desired
The Wife Desired
by Fr Leo J. Kinsella

Here is a marriage blueprint that every woman can follow. Happy marriages do not just happen, they are made. It takes three parties to make a good marriage; the husband, the wife, and the Lord. This book is concerned with helping the woman to become the wife desired and therefore loved, that every man worth having, wishes to find and keep.

This book sold over a quarter of a million copies shortly after its publication in 1951, and it was read by Catholics and non-Catholics alike. It is a practical manual. It should be read by every woman considering entering the matrimonial state and also by those women who are already married. It can also be read by men who may wish to see what a real challenge it is for a woman to live up to their expectations and how grateful they should be if they are blessed to find the woman of their desires. Father Kinsella penned another book titled The Man For Her, that covers the topic for the man.

When this book was first published in the early 1950 s, one in four marriages in the USA ended in divorce. Today, half of all first marriages end in divorce, and a much higher percentage of second and third marriages find the same end. This means that the majority of Americans are unsuccessful at the most important enterprise of their life, and it follows that the resultant destruction of the happiness, mental stability, and moral character of the majority of the people is the greatest problem that we face as a nation. Of course, the dangers to the salvation and earthly happiness of these people, and to the unfortunate children born of such unions, is where the cold statistical facts become more personal and of immediate concern to each of us. The divorce rates also do not speak to the issue of those many couples who do not divorce, but who nonetheless are not living in what could be termed deeply happy and fruitful marriages. Being a party to an unhappy marriage is one of the most difficult (yet largely avoidable) situations that anyone can endure in life.

The Nature, Dignity, and Mission of Woman
The Nature, Dignity, and Mission of Woman
by Fr. Karl Stehlin

One side of the attack finds its origin in Protestantism, in which women are sub-par creatures, not helpmates but slaves to men, never to develop the immense talents given by God. On the other side, far more common in our age, women are to remake themselves entirely into the strict imitation of men, breaking down all of the distinctions and differences which are the glory of woman. But what is the solution? Are we stuck in one or the other?

Find the soluntion in this excellent work The Nature, Dignity, and Mission of Woman is a resounding cry by Fr. Karl Stehlin against both of these errors. Fr. Stehlin, a priest with over 25 years of pastoral experience, takes up his pen to examine, explain, and defend real femininity. This book, the fruit of a series of talks given to young ladies at a Catholic boarding school, will help all Catholics, but especially the young, rediscover the immense dignity of being a woman, as lived out in accord with the plan of God's creation.

Topics covered include:
  • The Human Being as the Image of God
  • Union of Opposites
  • The Essential Vocation of Woman: Virgo, Sponsa, Mater, Icona Immaculata
  • Woman as Home-Maker
  • Woman's Mission in Serving, Suffering, and Hoping
  • Today's Problems
  • Preserving Her Beauty
  • Finding Her Vocation
  • The Specific Choice of a Husband
  • Much more!

This book is perfect for any woman or young lady who wishes to understand her important role as a Catholic woman created in the image of God and given a beautiful nature, dignity, and mission!

The Family Under Attack
The Family Under Attack
A Philosophical and Theological Defense of Human Society
By Don Pietro Leone

In our days the war against God and His Church has become deeper and broader than at any time in history. No longer are the powers of darkness content to attack only the institutional Church that God founded. The truth is that the human nature that God the Father created is now the subject of the adversary’s most violent persecution, and through the undermining of the very concept of human nature and the natural law enshrined in it the enemies of God hope to make any consideration of the concept of ‘super-nature’ and super-natural life disappear from the minds of men.

The Church has always been the true guardian of not only supernatural life, but of the natural law as well. Since the natural law is the law that God put into our nature and it is discernible in the light of reason, the Church, speaking for God, is the champion of sound reasoning. With the natural law as well as supernatural law governing human sexuality and family life under attack, Don Pietro Leone has risen to defend (and to properly distinguish) those areas, so that those who wish to defend the Church and human society in our age may have sound teaching upon which to base their actions.

In the course of this treatment of these topics he makes a detailed critique of certain novel presentations of themes found in the Magisterium from the time of the Second Vatican Council onwards. Amongst these doctrines is one he terms ‘Magisterial Personalism’ and another called the ‘Theology of the Body.’ Drawing upon scholastic philosophy and the perennial teaching of the Church, Don Pietro brings light to a subject recently plunged into obscurity and darkness that is not currently being dispelled successfully, even by the guardians of Truth themselves.

Don Pietro Leone holds degrees in humanities and philosophy, which he has taught at seminaries and universities in Europe and America. He lives in Italy where he currently divides his time between his pastoral and academic duties.

The Valiant Woman
The Valiant Woman
Conferences for Women
by Monseigneur Landriot, Archbishop of Rheims

The most valiant of all women is the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although this virtue is most manifest as a gift of the Holy Ghost, it is also manifest in the daily trials of the soldier of Christ who conquers inordinate self-love with God's grace.

The valiant (strong) woman does not have to be a St. Joan of Arc, but she must rule well her home in prudence, mercy, justice and truth. In Proverbs 31, the Holy Ghost Himself describes the "valiant woman."

This book is an extended version of discourses delivered to married women. Each address begins with a theme drawn from the final verses of the similitudes of Solomon. Landriot then explains the moral of the passage with a practical brilliance that could only come from a confessor whose heart was well seasoned in discerning the particular characteristics and maternal predispositions of the feminine soul. What emerges is an achievable ideal for every truly Catholic woman. Not one page fails to demonstrate what grace, what beauty, and what joy supernature can bring forth in the life of a woman called to the vocation of Christian motherhood.

Sins of the Tongue
Sins of the Tongue
Or Jealousy in Womas's Life
by Monseigneur Landriot, Archbishop of Rheims

This book consists of fifteen discourses (four on Sins of the Tongue, three on Envy and Jealousy, two on Rash Judgments, two on Christian Patience, and four on Grace) that were originally talks given to laywomen of his diocese in the late 19th century.

At the beginning the good Archbishop says, "I propose, my children, to give you some instructions on the tongue, and the faults which it causes us to commit. I shall commence today by speaking of the power and beauty of that organ, of the noble use which ought to be made of it, and of the many advantages we may derive from it."

There is precious little teaching on the topics covered in these instructions which is accessible to the average man and woman of today.
