Ernest, Br CSC
Brother Ernest was born John Dominic Ryan on August 4, 1897, in Elyria, Ohio. In 1918, he entered the Congregation of Holy Cross of Notre Dame and took his vows in 1923. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1925, a degree in library science from Catholic University of America, and a master's degree from the University of Portland. Brother Ernest taught in Evansville, Indiana; New Orleans; Indianapolis; Portland, Oregon; and at Notre Dame. The Dujarie Press of Notre Dame was his creation. He founded it in 1943, but even before then he was an author. His first book is Our Brothers, from 1931, but in his thirty-year career, Brother Ernest wrote scores of books, most of them biographies of saints for young readers.

Around 1628, during the Thirty Years' War, a small statue of the Infant Jases was given to a Carmelite monastery in Prague. The monastery was soon abandoned when an army invaded the city. In 1637, Father Cyril found the broken statue and heard the words, :The more you honour Me, the more I will bless you."
Today, many people visit Prague to see this statue, and replicas can be seen in churches and homes around the world. Giotto Bondone was born around 1266 in Italy. Young Giotto loved to draw pictures, and his parents fostered his talent by allowing him to study with a famous artist in Florence. Soon, Giotto became a master painter, and he was asked to paint beautiful pictures in many churches. Everyone, including the Pope, loved his paintings. At one point in this story, when he was praised by King Robert of Naples, Giotto said, “The gifts I have were only loaned to me by the good Lord that I might better serve Him and His Church.” Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of the great artist Giotto, who humbly used his talents for the greater glory of God and the Church.

One day he was captured by some Iroquois warrios and was tortured. He finally escaped and made his way back to France. He soon returned to Canada but again was tortured and became a martyr for the Faith. A Story of Father Jean Lamy

As a child, Jean Lamy, and his family did three things every evening: pray the Rosary, read a chapter from the ‘Imitation of Christ’ and read the life of the saint for the day from the ‘Lives of the Saints’. He was greatly devoted to Our Lady and carried a small statue of Her wherever he went. He worked hard and even though setbacks occurred he was able to enter the seminary at the age of twenty-three and commended his future work to the Blessed Virgin. Our Lady appeared to him and told him of the coming of World War I and the causes. Most people did not believe him until the war came to France. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of Father Jean Lamy by learning how to accept challenges no matter how difficult and how to live our lives so that we may receive the graces we need and to reach our true home in Heaven.

In 1810, Mother Mary St. Michel came from France to the Ursuline Sisters in New Orleans, Louisiana, bringing with her a statue of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. Later, when a fire was raging in the city, one of the Sisters asked Our Lady of Prompt Succor for her intercession. Immediately, the wind changed direction and the convent was saved! ! In 1815, before the Battle of New Orleans, the Sisters prayed all night. After an amazing victory the next day, General Andrew Jackson said, "The unerring hand of Providence shielded my men!"
